AI at work: understanding its uses and consequences on work activities and organization in radiology

The progressive dissemination of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in work settings raises numerous questions and concerns regarding their consequences, whether positive or negative, on work activities and organizations. This paper presents an empirical study that was designed to identify and analyze these consequences in radiology. This study focuses on two AI systems: a voice recognition dictation system for radiological reports and a system for detecting fractures on X-rays images. Based on a qualitative analysis of field observations of work activities and interviews with radiologists, emergency physicians, and medical secretaries, our findings help to provide a nuanced view on how AI may affect work in this sector. In contrast to the speculative discourse where AI is seen as a “positive” technology or as “threat” for workers, this study shows, on the one hand, how these kinds of AI systems help or may help these workers in their activities, and, on the other hand, how these systems raise problematic issues regarding their consequences not only for physicians but also for other workers such as medical assistants.
